EL PASO, Texas - The National Alliance of Mental Illness of El Paso kicked off its eighth annual mental health walk, NAMIWalks El Paso, early Thursday morning with a breakfast for participants in this year's run.
The breakfast kickoff featured guest speakers from NAMI of El Paso, including board President, Jim Jopling who spoke about the importance of the walk for our community. Chico the Chihuahua also made an appearance to help pump up participants and hand out door prizes. NAMIWalks is a nationwide event with over 80 walks happening across the nation throughout the year. This year marks the eighth year of the walk here in El Paso.
NAMIWalks El Paso hopes to spread a message of hope for those who fear seeking help for mental health issues.
Registration is free for the event, but participants are encouraged to raise funds. All the funds raised from NAMIWalks El Paso stay in the El Paso community and help continue NAMI El Paso’s mission to provide advocacy, public awareness, support and education so that all individuals living with mental health conditions and their families can build better lives.
This year's run will take place at Memorial Park Reserve on September 22, 2018. Check-in will be at 8:30 a.m. The race begins at 9:30 a.m.
