2nd trial underway of El Paso police officer for fatally shooting man in the back

EL PASO, Texas - The second trial is underway for an El Paso police officer charged with manslaughter for fatally shooting a Lower Valley man in the back in 2015.

Officer Mando Gomez had his first trial earlier this year end in a mistrial after a prosecutor collapsed in court.

Gomez is charged in the shooting death of Erik Emmanual Salas Sanchez, which happened when police responded to a domestic incident.

Gomez, who has been on administrative duty since the shooting more than five years ago, maintained he shot the man because he felt threatened — although court documents obtained by ABC-7 showed Sanchez was shot in the back.
