NWS: Dust Storm approaching I-10 near Lordsburg, drivers should take precaution

EL PASO, Texas - New Mexico State Police closed I-10 east and west at mile post 20.

All traffic is being diverted onto US 70 due to Hidalgo county experiencing high winds and blowing dust. Traffic is being diverted onto Highway 70 on both New Mexico and Arizona side.

The National Weather Service in Santa Teresa says it has a visual image of a dust storm approaching I-10 from the "Lordsburg Playa."

The NWS is urging drivers to take precautions as they drive into the Lordsburg area.

If you are unable to exit the highway during a dust storm, the New Mexico and Arizona departments of transportation urge drivers to pull over to the side of the road and turn off all of the vehicle's lights.

Doing so will help keep other vehicles from following the lights and crashing into you.

Monday afternoon, six people were killed in a 25-vehicle pileup near Lordsburg.

New Mexico State Police blames a dust storm that severely reduced visibility.
