EL PASO, TEXAS – - UTEP junior Martin Simonsen was one of 45 individuals selected to participate in the 2014 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships on Monday.
Six 54-hole regional tournaments will be conducted May 15-17. Simonsen is ticketed to the San Antonio regional at Briggs Ranch Golf Club.
The native of Gistrup, Denmark, will be making his second NCAA regional appearance. He tied for 27th place at the Norman (Okla.) regional as a freshman in 2012.
The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals, slated for May 23-28 at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.
The San Antonio regional features participating teams College of Charleston, Columbia, Georgia, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Northwestern, SMU, TCU, UCF, UCLA, USF, Vanderbilt and VCU. The individuals in the San Antonio regional, besides Simonsen, are Sacred Heart's Peter Ballo, Southeastern Louisiana's Grady Brame, San Diego's Grant Forrest, U.S. Military Academy's Peter Kim, Louisiana Tech's Victor Lange, Arizona's Alex McMahon and Eric Oja, Texas State's Stuart Smallwood and Houston Baptist's Preston Stanley.
Simonsen leads UTEP with a 72.8 scoring average in 13 tournaments (38 rounds) this season. He has been the Miners' top finisher six times while picking up four top-10 and five top-20 showings on the year.
