UTEP released financial information regarding pay for UTEP's head football coach, men's basketball coach, and the school's new athletic director as part of an open records request submitted by KVIA.
As it turns out, the new guys are making more than those they replaced - at least in base salary.
Here is info regarding salaries for football coach Dana Dimel, interim men's basketball coach Phil Johnson, and UTEP A.D. Jim Senter.
Football coach Dana Dimel:
UTEP released a memorandum of appointment, not a full contract, for UTEP's new football coach for the 2017-18 financial year.
The memorandum (for the 2017-18 fiscal year) states Dimel will be making a salary of $700,000 to start. The memorandum does not provide any information on bonuses and other incentives for Dimel.
By comparison, former head coach Sean Kugler made $515,332 in his last full season with the Miners (2016), including possible bonus money (Kugler made $24,611 in bonus money that year). That figure was based on a report issued by USA Today.
Men's basketball interim coach Phil Johnson:
As an assistant under Tim Floyd, Johnson was making about $198,000 per year plus bonuses that included one month's extra pay for making the big dance and another extra month worth of pay for winning the Conference USA championship.
It's not stated if these bonuses carry over now that he's head coach.
However, Johnson's stated salary is a bit higher at $217,000 now that he has taken over as the interim head coach.
Athletic Director Jim Senter:
It appears Jim Senter is making more than former A.D. Bob Stull did, at least in base salary.
Senter's base salary is $300,000 to begin with. Again, UTEP did not provide information on any possible bonuses, if there are any.
Bob Stull was making $264,000 per year at the end of his tenure, according to a report released in 2017 by the El Paso Times.
