El Paso, TEXAS -

New Mexico State University stand out wide receiver Austin Franklin has been ruled academically ineligible for the 2013 season.  Franklin will use this season as a red-shirt year while sitting out.

"After taking over the football program in January I was made aware of Austin's academic status, which stemmed from the 2012 fall semester," NMSU Coach Doug Martin said in a statement from the school. "This is why I held him out of spring practice, to allow him a chance to possibly recover academically."

Last year as a sophomore, Franklin led the team with 74 receptions, 1,245 yards receiving, 16.8 yards per reception, nine touchdowns and 103.8 receiving yards per game.

Earlier in the year Franklin was named to the Biletnikoff Award watch list, which is an award that is given to the top wide receiver in college football. "In the end, Austin did not live up to the Aggie Football standards and his academic responsibilities," Martin said. "Austin will remain with the team during season and is expected to participate in all team activities including practice."

NMSU kicks off the regular season August 31st in Austin against the Texas Longhorns.
