MESA, Arizona - The NMSU baseball team (35-22) saw its season come to a close Friday night in the WAC Tournament after falling 11-7 to CSU Bakersfield (31-23).
The loss followed a disappointing 5-4 defeat at the hands of Northern Colorado the day before.
The Aggies entered the tournament as the top seed and had high hopes of securing a spot in the NCAA Tournament if they could take care of business against WAC foes. (Grand Canyon finished with the best record in WAC play during the regular season, but GCU was not eligible for the WAC Tournament).
But NMSU struggled early and often, falling behind CSUB 6-0 in the bottom of the first.
Brent Sakurai responded for the Aggies with an RBI single in the third to put the Aggies on the board. Sakurai finished 4-5 on the evening.
Mason Fishback hit a two-run homer in the fourth to cut the lead to 6-3, but that's as close as NMSU would get the rest of the way.
CSUB was able to push its lead to 11-3, putting the game virtually out of reach.
NMSU did score the final four runs of the game, but it was too little too late as CSUB was able to hold on for the 11-7 win.
The Aggies won 35 games during the regular season - one more than they won last season.
