EL PASO, Texas - Tornillo school district officials say two brothers, 11 and 8 years old, were involved in an accidental shooting Thursday evening. The younger child was wounded and has died.
According to a statement released by the El Paso County Sheriff's Office Friday, the boy was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, and he was pronounced dead there.
A spokeswoman for the sheriff confirmed deputies were called to the 19000 block of Highland Thursday. At the time, she would only tell ABC-7 deputies were looking into a report of an injured party.
It is not clear how the boys came in contact with the weapon.
From a distance, an ABC-7 photographer on the scene saw a distraught family and a woman crying inside a home Thursday night.
Both boys were students in the Tornillo ISD school district.
ABC-7 spoke with Elisa Davis, human resources manager for Tornillo ISD.
"It will be a long healing process for all involved and we will be working with the children for as long as we need to to make sure they can cope with the situation," Davis said.
The school district is planning a vigil for next week.
The sheriff's Major Crimes Unit continues to investigate the incident.
