State Representative Naomi Gonzalez was sentenced to jail time for drinking and driving and causing a wreck in 2013.
Gonzalez will spend 15 days in the Travis County Jail in Austin, Texas. Her sentence began Friday morning.
The state representative was arrested in Austin after she drove drunk, hit a car and caused the vehicle to hit a bicyclist in March of last year. Three people had to be hospitalized.
Austin Police reports said her blood alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit, Gonzalez also failed a breathalyzer test.
Rep. Gonzalez's released the following statement Friday morning:
"I sincerely apologize to the others involved in this accident for the pain and disruption to their lives. I am sorry that my thoughtless actions have negatively impacted them and their families. I ask that one day they can find it in their hearts to forgive me. I also ask for forgiveness from all of those - including my family and my community - who have been hurt by this. That was never my intention. I profoundly regret it and I will carry this regret for the rest of my life.
"I accept the sentence of the Court, once completed, I will take the next steps in completing my term of office. I am thankful for the prayers and support I have received over these past difficult months. I will never forget it."
The statement also said she will not make further comments to the media.
