NMSU student who allegedly made mass shooting statement is in federal custody

EL PASO, Texas - A New Mexico State University student remains in federal custody, accused of threatening to "shoot up" the campus.

Zachary Milton Hess, 19, is scheduled back in the courtroom Friday.

Federal authorities accuse him of making a threat and maliciously conveying false information on the Internet.

According to the criminal complaint obtained by the ABC-7 I Team, Hess made the threat while chatting online with someone in the United Kingdom.

That person took a screen shot of the conversation and posted it on the NMSU Facebook page.

Officials immediately notified students and contacted law enforcement.

Hess faces 10 years in prison.
