Las Cruces police identify man killed in Highway 70 rollover

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico - Police identified the 28-year-old driver killed in Monday afternoon's rollover on Highway 70 as Jose Mejia.

Mejia died late Monday afternoon at Mountainview Regional Medical Center, police said.

The wreck happened about 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 25, 2017 just west of Highland Elementary School.

Police said Mejia was driving a Chevrolet Suburban west on Highway 70 when it veered right, crossed Bataan Memorial West in front of Highland Elementary School, jumped a curb and rolled several times before coming to a rest.

Police said Mejia, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown out of the vehicle.

The crash forced the closure of both westbound lanes of traffic on Bataan Memorial West and the outside lane of traffic on Highway 70 west of Sonoma Ranch Boulevard.
