A fire broke out early Monday morning in a mobile home in north Las Cruces, destroying a family's valuables and much of the building's interior.
"It's very tragic," said Jeri Smith, a friend of the homeowner.
Thankfully, no one was home at the time of the fire because of the holiday. Normally, a couple and two children live at the property near Jasmine Drive and Spitz Ave, the homeowner said.
"I would hate to be here if the circumstances were different," Smith said. "It's just a blessing that nobody was here, nobody was hurt, even the cats knew to get out."
A spokesman for the fire department said the cause of the fire is under investigation, but the homeowner told ABC-7 that it was electrical.
"It's really sad," Smith said. "It's really hard."
The homeowner said the building looked unsafe to enter, but ABC-7 was unable to determine if the building is a total loss.
"That's a lot to deal with, but, just knowing that everybody's okay, you know, makes it a little bit better," Smith said.
