Neighbors, friends remember child who was killed Thursday

A 9-year-old died Thursday night after being hit by a car

Young child hit, killed in central El Paso

EL PASO, Texas - He was a gift from God. That's how a woman described 9-year-old Jose Cordova to her children on a hot Friday afternoon. They stood just a few feet from the spot where Cordova was struck and killed by a driver on Thursday night. Her son witnessed the crash.

"They know he was here for a little while, but he is now in a better place," she told ABC-7.

Cordova was a student at Clendenin Elementary School. The counselor from the school said there is work going on behind the scenes to get grief counselors at the school on Monday, which would have been Cordova's first day as a fourth grader.

ABC-7s went to the home of the young boy. The home is just one block from where the wreck occurred. It appeared as though someone was inside, however they declined to come to the door. On the doorstep an empty apple juice box and a bike helmet sat.

Those that knew Cordova said he was a good kid. Parents in the central El Paso neighborhood he lived in say he was a sweet kid. His third-grade teacher said he was a a bright boy who always helped those around him.

"I love him," said the teacher. "I'm going to miss him."

A memorial has been formed next to the spot Cordova took his last breaths. Children who play near the area have dropped off small toys, notes, even a pair of balloons.

As for the woman who was driving the truck that hit Cordova, she has not been charged. The kids who witnessed the crash said the sun was just going down. Police have said neither speed nor alcohol appear to be factors in the crash.
