LAS CRUCES, NM - Crews in Las Cruces finished installing a skywalk at Las Cruces High School. Once completed it will be the cities first pedestrian bridge and the state's first public school to install one. The bridge however is only one part of major construction taking place at Las Cruces High School.
The entire project was divided into two phases. The project is not yet complete ABC-7 caught with the project director, he gave us an update as to how construction is progressing. Crews got an early start Friday morning to install the much anticipated sky bridge.
It's the cities first pedestrian bridge. The skywalk will connect the school to a new building across El Paseo drive. It's one of the cities busiest streets, and according to Pettigrew, project architects had that in mind as they went through with designs. The skywalk however is only a minor detail in the big picture. The first phase of construction will be completed by next summer. The second part will be be phased over the next couple of years, but Pettigrew estimates it will be complete sometime around 2017. The cost of the entire project is $82 million.
Funding for the project was approved during the 2010 and 2014 bond elections, and is also funded by the state.
