EPISD to install internal controls to monitor student transcripts

This goal was born out of the cheating scandal at Bowie High.

EL PASO, Texas - The El Paso Independent School District discussed the results of its corrective action plan at Tuesday's board meeting.

One of the CAPs targets cheating at EPISD high schools. The district will now install internal controls at their high schools that will track where credits are going on a transcript and how they were awarded starting next school year.

This goal was born out of the cheating scandal at Bowie High. Since the district conducted it's internal audit last year, it will also be able to monitor where a grade shows up on student transcripts and how the grade was given. The goal is to have a standardized operating procedure for grading students so students can't be so easily disappeared or their records tinkered with. The district is also going to train high school counselors, assistant principals and principals to ensure they know what's expected of them.

The board also voted to fund their employees health care by $6.5 million. This would increase the district's contribution by $115 dollars per month. Teacher representatives at Tuesday's meeting said it doesn't matter how much the district contributes, they want out of the expensive, lifelong contract with TRS Active care and are supporting legislation that would legally let the district break their commitment.
