Bad weather caused the plane carrying Vice President Joe Biden to abort its initial landing, creating a rough ride and passenger uncertainty over when the plane could land.

The plane -- Air Force Two - attempted to land at the Charlotte Douglas airport for a campaign event. After an initial descent, the military version of a Boeing 757 harshly pulled back up, jolting those on board and raising concern aboard that something was wrong.

After gaining altitude, the plane circled the airport a few times. Reporters traveling with the vice president wondered what was wrong and when the plane would land. About 15 minutes after the initial jolt of turbulence, the plane landed safely. Weather forecasts showed scattered thunderstorms over the city.

Upon arrival at the campaign event, the vice president apologized for being about an hour late and mentioned the incident.

"Hey folks, you probably feel like you waited as long as the convention took!" Biden said, referencing Charlotte's recent hosting of the Democratic National Convention. "I'm flattered any of you are left!"

"As the traveling press can tell you, there are some queasy stomachs on our plane. ...We got off (the plane) late because of weather. And we got here and we had to make several passes before we landed. That's why we're late, I promise you we take you seriously. It's, ugh ...blame it on the weather."
