EL PASO, Texas - For the eighth year in a row, the Ysleta Independent School District is making sure students are well prepared for the first day of school.
YISD officials said it gave out nearly 2,000 backpacks for Saturday's 'Back to School' Rally.
"This is great, it helps the parents out and certainly excites the students about going to school," parents Ceci Avalos said.
The backpacks were donated by several different companies that sponsored the event.
"This is a great way for us to give back to them," said Jesse Gutierrez, the general manager of Delgado Acosta Spencer Linebarger & Perez Lawfirm. "Their faces light up, and they make you light up."
All students had to do was show up in a school uniform, or show their school IDs to get a free backpack.
For some students the choice of which backpack to get was easy.
"I like the color red, and it's cool," student Denae Ramirez said. "I'm excited about going to third grade and doing a lot of cool stuff."
Classes for YISD start up August 28th.
"This is typically the time when students are getting tired of summer vacation," YISD superintendent Xavier De La Torre said. "It's kind of like Christmas morning."
Costco, Delgado Acosta Spencer Linebarger & Perez, and Olivas Music were all sponsors for the event.
Students K-12 received backpacks.
