Buddy Walk

EL PASO, Texas - Hundreds gathered for the 8th annual Buddy Walk at EPCC's Valle Verde Campus on Saturday.

The walk is hosted by the Down Syndrome Coalition for El Paso to raise money and awareness.

"Everybody is a part of mankind. Just because you have Down Syndrome, or green eyes, or blue eyes, or whatever, we're all one," said Jim Heiney, member of the Down Syndrome Coalition for El Paso. "It's good to get everyone together to have a good time and it is a good time."

According to the coalition's website, the walk has raised $29,170.

"Especially families with children with Down Syndrome, they're very appreciative we're getting the word out," Heiney said. "All the people with Down Syndrome will receive a medal to remember this day by."

Claudia Garcia was walking with her 7-year-old son Giovani, who was born with Down Syndrome. She said she's thankful for the walk.

"He's been the light of our family. He makes us laugh, and he's our hope for everything," Garcia said. "I think families should educate their kids and let them know that these kids, all they want is to give love and to show love."
