El Paso, TX - Giving back to the community through music.

As the Bel Air High School drumline prepares for the upcoming football season, they're taking some time to raise money for charity.

Friday, they'll be holding a 24-hour drum-a-thon.

The group has set up a GoFundMe account with a goal of raising $20,000.

Half of the money raised will go toward new equipment for the percussion section, but the other half will go to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Benjamin Perez is the Bel Air drumline director, he said the drum-a-thon was a perfect way to show his students how they can use music to give back to the community, "What I've tried to do is teach them that they can have fun here and they can raise money for themselves, but ultimately there's a bigger picture out there that they need to be a part of," Perez said.

And Perez's students are up for the challenge, including senior snare drummer Fransisco Sanchez, "At first we were like oh my gosh you're going to be drumming for 24-hours you're crazy, I don't think you're going to be able to stay up that long," Sanchez said, "But then they really thought about it and they were like, 'wow' this is good thing that you're doing, you're raising funds for cancer."

The group of 25 percussionists will be performing for 24 hours straight and their performance will be live streamed on YouTube.

They'll be alternating every 3 hours to try and combat the fatigue, but the overall goal, the group says, makes it all worth it.

"Drumming is an important thing in my life and I know that if I give the people a show, people will donate," Sanchez said.

The drum-a-thon will be live streamed on YouTube beginning at noon July 21st and ending at noon on July 22nd.
