Police are investigating a deadly shooting at the downtown jail involving an inmate and a police officer.
It happened shortly after 6 p.m. Friday at the downtown detention facility located at 601 E. Overland.
According to police, an officer was escorting a 37-year-old man from the jail to process a medical release.
After exiting the jail, police said the man became confrontational with the officer.
The physical struggle elevated to a point where the officer pulled his gun, and shot the man, according to officials.
Officials said first aid was administered, and the man was taken to a local hospital where he later died.
The man was booked into the jail originally on charges of assault on a public servant, assault bodily injury, assault, and injury to an elderly.
The investigation into the officer-involved shooting is ongoing. Texas Rangers and the police department's Shooting Review Team are investigating.
