The Sun City has seen a slew of popular restaurant chains open El Paso locations in recent years, including Corner Bakery, Panda Express and Five Guys Burgers and Fries.
ABC-7's news partners at El Paso Inc. report that you can now add Chipotle Mexican Grill to that list.
The Inc. reports that the popular Denver-based burrito chain is slated to open early next year in the former home of 2900 Kitchen & Lounge, across the street from UTEP's Don Haskins center in west El Paso.
Chipotle has more than 1,100 eateries nationwide, most set up in trendy parts of major cities.
The company's mission statement reads, "Food with Integrity." Chipotle uses organic vegetables and naturally-raised meats in its burrito and taco dishes.
With El Paso known for its top-notch Mexican food, ABC-7 wanted to know if local burrito shops are worried.
Daniel Junco, a manager at Burritos Crisostomo in east El Paso, said while he does think Chipotle's burritos are tasty, he feels his restaurant has Mexican authenticity on its side.
"Competition is always good," Junco said. "It brings your A-game. So, hopefully, we'll give them a run for their money."
ABC-7 confirmed with Chipotle that the company is in the process of planning its first El Paso location.
El Paso Inc. spoke with a Chipotle spokesman. Read his remarks in this week's edition.
