JAKARTA, Indonesia (CNN) -

At least 19 people were killed in Indonesia during two separate landslides brought on by heavy rains, national disaster officials said.

Rock and mud poured down hillsides in Agam, West Sumatra, last week and in neighboring Jambi province, where a geothermal drilling facility is located.

Rescue crews could be seen digging alongside heavy machinery as authorities reported said they were continuing their search for survivors. Five people remained missing.

Landslides and flash floods are seasonal occurrences in the Southeast Asia archipelago, where mountainous terrain and heavy rains make for prime slide conditions.
