EL PASO, Tx. - Officials release new information on the investigation into the US Mail found in a Juarez house late last month.
Mexico's federal attorney general's office, known as the PGR, has opened an investigation into the case.
When the mail was first discovered, officials with Juarez's Central Postal Office moved it to their location.
Officials say this is a problem for investigators because now the evidence is no longer at the home of the man suspected of stealing it, meaning it is now harder to prove that person did it.
According to Juarez's Channel 44, Mexican federal authorities executed a search warrant at the Juarez home of Juan Manuel Vargas Lopez. Vargas-Lopez is the former Juarez postal worker suspected of stealing mail coming from the US since the late 1990's.
Mexico's attorney general hopes forensic evidence found at the crime scene in January will help them build their case a
A federal prosecutor, who did not provide his name to the media, says they think Lopez stole the mail in order to pocket checks and cash US citizens mail to family and friends in Mexico.
Both Lopez and another Juarez postal employee wanted for this crime are at large.
Federal authorities believe the two postal employees stole 10 metric tons (just over 11 US tons) of mail in the past 8 years.
