Ft. Bliss set to get solar power plant project

Updated:

FT. BLISS, Tx. - If a pilot project at Fort Bliss is successful, the Sun City could someday be home to the world's largest solar power plant.

During a Tuesday news conference, Ft. Bliss announces it will be the site of a major solar energy project, thanks to a partnership with the Naval Post-Graduate School.

The new project will test three state-of-the-art systems to collect and convert solar energy into electricity more efficiently. The new system is expected to cut the cost of solar power in half.

The technology is able to collect power from sunrise to sunset, increasing the hours during the day when regular solar energy systems don't function. The solar energy systems will also function in overcast, cloudy conditions.

The project is divided into a four phases, with the first being completed in six months, while the final phase is scheduled to begin in Fall 2009.

Officials tell ABC-7 Ft. Bliss is the ideal location to conduct the first large scale testing of this new technology.

Ron Tudor, with the Naval Post-Graduate School says, "Four thousand feet in elevation, 18% average humidity per year, 330 solar days to work with...this is paradise for solar energy. "

Once officials have worked out any kinks with the technology, they say they're planning to build a 20-megawatt solar energy plant at Fort Bliss that would be the largest one in the world.
