CHAPARRAL, NM - A deadly fire ripped through a Chaparral home overnight, killing two people and a toddler.

According to investigators, the blaze broke out just after 11:25 p.m. at a mobile home in the 2500 block of Capital Dr.

There were four people inside the mobile home at the time and a man was able to escape. However, three of the four were cornered by the fire in one of the back rooms. The bodies of the three victims were sent to the Office of the Medical Examiner at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.

The medical examiner's office identified the victims as 20-year-old Elena Diaz, her brother, 17-year-old Rodolfo Diaz, and her infant daughter, 14-month-old Eileen Millan.

Fire officials say the three were unable to get out because flames blocked the hallway and there were metal bars on the windows. Neighbors tell ABC-7 the deaths were devastating and described their frantic efforts to rescue the victims.

"I got an axe and gave it to someone," said Felipe Reyes, "They were trying to break in through the bars on the windows but they couldn't do it. We even tried to rip the bars off."

According to investigators, the fire started due to improperly spliced wires providing power to the home.

The family and friends of the victims are taking donations to help cover funeral and burial costs. Donations can be made at any El Paso Wells Fargo to account number 5179743165.
