EL PASO, Texas -- Police said 23-year-old Daniel Calhoun, a Fort Bliss soldier, died following a vehicle crash early Sunday morning near Downtown El Paso.
Police identified the victim of the crash Tuesday after the U.S. Army notified his family. Fort Bliss officials said Calhoun was a private and was not married. He was assigned to the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division.
According to the El Paso Police Department's Special Traffic Investigations Unit, Calhoun was driving a 1999 Ford Explorer eastbound on Paisano, approaching the intersection of San Antonio, when he lost control of the vehicle and crossed over into the westbound lanes of Paisano.
He then slid into a parked vehicle, with the force of the crash pushing both vehicles into a rock wall. The Explorer then crashed into a telephone pole before coming to a stop.
The crash sent the rock wall's debris flying, which damaged several other vehicles.
Investigators said Calhoun, who died at the scene, was the only person inside the Explorer. In addition, the investigators said speed contributed to the crash, but Calhoun was wearing a seat belt.
