Man suspected of beating, threatening to run over girlfriend

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico - Police arrested a Las Cruces man suspected of beating his girlfriend and threatening to run over her.

Sergio Urbin-Ortega, 28, of the 4200 block of Hoffman Drive, is charged with two fourth-degree felony counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one misdemeanor count of battery against a household member.

Investigators say the incident began around 7 p.m. on Monday  July 10, at Urbin-Ortega’s residence when he got into an argument with his 35-year-old girlfriend and ordered her to leave.

Investigators tell us that as the woman walked away from his home, Urbin-Ortega got behind the wheel of his vehicle and allegedly drove directly towards her as though he was going to run her over.

Investigators believe Urbin-Ortega then got out of the vehicle, forced the woman into his car and reportedly struck her several times as he drove along Valley View Avenue.

The suspect is alleged to have armed himself with a large knife which he used to threaten the woman.

The woman was able to get away from Urbin-Ortega a short time later.

A friend took her to Memorial Medical Center. Her injuries are not life-threatening.

Urbin-Ortega was arrested early Tuesday morning and booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where he’s being held without bond.
