Las Cruces mother arrested after baby girl, toddler test positive for meth

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico - Police arrested the mother of two children, an 8-month-old girl and 2-year-old girl, who tested positive for methamphetamine.

Stephanie Silva, 26, of the 1500 block of west Picacho Avenue, is charged with two counts of child abuse. Silva's arrest photo is not yet available.

On April 6, 2017, police were dispatched to investigate a domestic dispute at Silva's residence.

When they arrived, officers found Silva with her two daughters. The woman's boyfriend left the home before officers arrived.

As officers conducted a protective sweep of the residence, they allegedly observed Silva's two young children in the master bedroom in close proximately to a glass meth pipe on the floor.

Officers also observed a clear plastic baggie that contained a residue suspected of being meth and a black digital scale, police said.

The two young girls were placed into protective custody with the state's Children, Youth and Families Department where they were tested for drugs.

Silva also consented to a drug test, police said. Results allegedly revealed Silva and both girls tested positive for methamphetamine.

Silva was arrested May 31 and booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where she's being held on bond set at $15,000.
