Alleged drunk driver accused of killing pedestrian, victim identified

El Paso, Texas - El Paso Police identified the pedestrian killed Saturday, July 1st as 57-year-old Gary Joseph Galbraith.

Police say 27-year-old Jose Jesus Mendez of Santa Teresa, N.M was speeding on the 7100 block of Westwind, when he ran a stop sign, a traffic light and struck Galbraith.

Police say Mendez continued driving for several blocks with the pedestrian still on the vehicle, up to Redd Road and then entered Franklin High School property.

Police say Mendez fled the scene on foot, but was located a short time later.

Galbraith was taken to UMC where he died.

Police say there were two female 17-year-old passengers inside Mendez's truck. One passenger was taken to Las Palmas for minor injuries she sustained after Mendez struck the pedestrian.

Mendez was arrested and charged with Intoxication Manslaughter and Accident Involving Death. He was taken to the El Paso County Detention Facility under a $350,000 bond.

Police say speed and alcohol are factors in the crash.
