EL PASO - A Houston man died in a four-car pileup Monday on Interstate 10 near Lordsburg, N.M.
New Mexico State Police said Leroy Turner, 64, was involved in a crash involving two other vehicles on the eastbound lanes of I-10. When he stepped out of his car, investigators said, a fourth car struck him. Turner died as he was being flown to a hospital.
Turner's passenger, 59-year-old Sharon Buckner, was injured and taken to Gila Regional Hospital. The driver and passenger of the third vehicle were taken to Mimbres General Hospital with injuries that we not considered life-threatening.
The crash remains under investigation.
It is unclear if the crash was weather-related, but at 5 p.m., about 45 minutes before the crash, the National Weather Service in El Paso tweeted, "Interstate 10 has been closed around Lordsburg New Mexico due to low visibility from high winds and blowing dust. #nmwx."
Sequential tweets warned of low visibility with pictures of blowing dust.
