Border Patrol agents in Santa Teresa arrested a man Sunday after discovering the pickup truck he was in was stolen and loaded with drugs.

A little before 9 a.m., agents working near the Camel Mountain area tracked a vehicle that had driven through the desert across the border and was heading westbound on New Mexico Highway 9.

Border Patrol agents from the Deming station assisted in the search and as authorities closed in, the truck abruptly turned around and headed east before turning south in an attempt to return to Mexico.

Agents followed the truck until it became stuck in the desert sand and brush. At that point, two people jumped out of the vehicle and ran south.

Authorities managed to apprehend one person, Manuel Gavino Castillo-Olivas, while the other escaped and made it across the border.

Upon further investigation, agents discovered 1,915 lbs. of marijuana worth approximately $1,532,704 inside the 2006 Ford F-250 truck.

Castillo-Olivas was identified as a Mexican citizen with a prior deportation from the U.S.

Authorities have referred the case to the Drug Enforcement Agency in Las Cruces for prosecution.
