EL PASO, Texas - A petition signed by nearly 6,300 residents of El Paso County is calling for the halt to construction of the border fence, and for comprehensive reform of the nation's immigration policy.

The Border Network for Human Rights presented the 270 page document to Commissioners Court Monday morning.

Six to seven members of the Border Network held up display boards with the petition pasted to its walls, displaying it to the court while Garcia thanked commissioners for their support.

In the past month, the county has passed a resolution against the border wall and entered two lawsuits challenging the Homeland Security Secretary's authority when he waived about 30 laws protecting the environment, endangered animals, and water, among others.

The BNHR Director Fernando Garcia told the court the petition will be given to the Customs and Border Protection office in El Paso.
