Associated Press - November 26, 2009 1:55 AM ET

CARNUEL, N.M. (AP) - A Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department spokesman says two people were killed Wednesday in a two-vehicle accident on Interstate 40 near Carnuel.

Lt. David Knowles says the westbound lanes were closed around 8 p.m. due to the accident, but traffic was rerouted on a service road and flowing smoothly on a five-mile detour.

Knowles says a vehicle traveling east on the Interstate entered the westbound lanes, causing the collision.

He says a 2-year-old child in 1 of the cars was taken to an Albuquerque hospital.

The names of the victims were expected to be released sometime Thursday.

Knowles says the road was shut down for an investigation into the cause of the crash, and authorities anticipated the it would reopen by 3 a.m. MST.
