El Paso, Texas -- Appointments for the H1N1 vaccine today at the convention center were supposed to eliminate problems encountered after a chaotic first round of inoculations back in October, but today's one-day clinic got off to a rough start.
About 3,500 people will have received the free vaccination by the end of today from the city's Public Health Department.
Members of the media were escorted through a mock round of inoculations where about 30 city employees received their shots.
This was the only time the media was allowed to be inside the convention center because of federal medical privacy restrictions cited by city officials.
As the city employees were vaccinated, some working the stations inside the convention center seemed confused by the process.
"Too many chiefs, very few Indians," was a phrase heard several times as different orders were given back and forth from different people.
The employees received their shots in what seemed to be a speedy process despite the confusion.
"I'm sure the first hours it's going to be a little clumsy till everybody gets the idea of how this is done," said Mike Hill, director of the Public Health Department. "None of these people have ever done anything like this before. This morning we brought in the staff and started training them, but again it's been a just in time training."
Perry Segura, one of the thousands in line for the vaccine, said there was quite a difference between what was going on inside and outside the convention center.
"Outside it looked like total confusion, but once you get inside they are a little more organized,"
The clinic is expected to run until about 8 p.m. today.
As of Monday, the city's Public Health Department has received 27,473 doses of the H1N1 vaccine, according to Texasflu.org. The Web site also states 108,482 doses of the H1N1 vaccine have shipped or are being shipped to registered providers in El Paso County.
