Farmington plan recommends $136M in new roads

Associated Press - November 23, 2009 11:35 AM ET

FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) - A transportation plan for San Juan County recommends that area governments plan to build $136.2 million in new roads by 2035.

The Farmington Metropolitan Planning Organization is recommending new roads for Farmington, Aztec and nearby areas of San Juan County. A presentation went to Farmington city councilors last week, but no action was taken to fund any roads.

The federal government requires the transportation plan be updated every five years. Planner Joe Delmagori says the plan proposes dozens of new roads and road improvements throughout the county, but only a fraction of those might be built.

The next step is narrowing the list to projects that can be funded in the next 25 years.

The projects are aimed at extending major arterials and helping planners stay ahead of growth.
