Four more people have died of H1N1 flu in the Borderland, officials said Wednesday.
A 66-year-old male and a 28-year-old female, both from East El Paso, are the county’s 12th and 13th 2009 H1N1 influenza-related fatalities, the City of El Paso Department of Public Health announced today.
Both were recently hospitalized with an influenza-like illness and laboratory tests confirmed each had the H1N1 virus. The cases are not related.
City health officials said the man did not have underlying health conditions but the woman did.
“Our deepest sympathies go out to the families of these individuals,” Michael Hill, Director of the City of El Paso Department of Public Health, said in a news release.
On Wednesday health officials in New Mexico reported two H1N1-related deaths in Dona Ana County in the last week, a 29-year-old woman with no chronic medical conditions and a 12-year-old boy with chronic medical conditions. No information was given on where in the county the two victims lived.
Officials did not release the identities of the four people who died.
The City of El Paso Department of Public Health will provide the H1N1 flu vaccine at a mass vaccination clinic on Tuesday, Nov. 24 at the Judson F. Williams Convention Center. The free vaccine will be given out by appointment only to individuals identified to be at high risk for developing complications arising from the H1N1 flu.
