Teague criticized for health care vote

Associated Press - November 9, 2009 5:45 PM ET

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Rep. Harry Teague was criticized by groups that support health care reform after the Democrat voted against a health care bill that has passed the U.S. House.

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, AFL-CIO, New Mexico and the AARP New Mexico say they're disappointed in the congressman.

The measure passed 220-215 late Saturday.

Teague's spokeswoman says he's not available Monday to comment on his vote.

New Mexico's two other freshman Democrats, Reps. Martin Heinrich and Ben Ray Lujan, both voted for the bill.

Teague said before the vote that the bill doesn't do enough to rein in health care costs or the rising national debt.

Heinrich says he hopes momentum can be built to push the measure through Congress this year.
