Texas, NM rape suspect scrutinized in Colorado

Associated Press - November 4, 2009 4:55 PM ET

PUEBLO, Colo. (AP) - Authorities say a Colorado man suspected of sexually assaulting more than 12 women in New Mexico and Texas and trying to kill a police officer in southern Colorado has prompted inquiries from investigators in northern Colorado.

Police in Fort Collins say they're looking into whether 47-year-old Robert Howard Bruce of Pueblo was involved in at least two sexual assaults in 2008.

Bruce is being held on suspicion of trying to kill a Pueblo officer who was to testify against him in a peeping Tom case.

Authorities say DNA from the attempted-murder case linked Bruce to sexual assaults in Albuquerque, N.M., and Austin.

Police Lubbock, Texas, say they're looking at whether Bruce was involved in assaults there.

Kansas authorities say they checked on whether Bruce could have been connected to a series of sexual assaults in Lawrence and Manhattan, but they don't believe he was involved.
