Lincoln forest issues road use maps

Associated Press - October 15, 2009 8:35 AM ET

ALAMOGORDO, N.M. (AP) - Lincoln National Forest is issuing a map that shows where drivers can use their motorized vehicles in the forest.

The Motor Vehicle Use Maps are free and available at forest offices in Alamogordo, Carlsbad, Cloudcroft and Ruidoso and online.

The map will be revised and reissued each year to accommodate changes to trails that are open to motorized vehicles.

Motorized vehicle use is restricted in the southern New Mexico forest to certain designated routes.

The policy, in place since 1987, governs motorized vehicles on national forest system lands in Chaves, Eddy, Lincoln and Otero counties.

Smokey Bear District ranger Buck Sanchez says employees are installing signs, but will use the map to inform the public about routes open to motorized vehicles.
