DAYTON, Texas (AP) - A Liberty County couple has been charged with shooting four people, including a 7-year-old boy and a 5-year-old girl, who they mistakenly thought were trespassing on their property.

Investigators say the victims were off-roading near Dayton when Gale and Sheila Muhs, both 45, each took one shot at the group with a 12-gauge shotgun.

Liberty County Chief Deputy Ken DeFoor says the group consisted of 36-year-old Donald Coffee Sr., his 7-year-old son Donald Jr. and 5-year-old girl Destiny, and 30-year-old friend Patrick Cammack.

Donald Coffee Jr. and Cammack were both shot in the head and are in critical condition at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston. Destiny Coffee was shot in the elbow and is in good condition.

The Muhs have been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and are both in the Liberty County Jail.
