An 18-year-old girl from Texas is dead following a car accident in Tatum, New Mexico.

Shortly before 10pm Friday, 17-year-old Cynthia Lujan-Benavidez was driving north in a four-door Chevrolet on State Road 125 northeast of Tatum when she swerved to avoid a deer in the road, according to authorities.

They said 18-year-old Myra Hernandez of Morton, Texas was a passenger in the Chevrolet.

The car went into a ditch and rolled over. According to authorities, Hernandez was not wearing a seat belt.

Paramedics transported Hernandez to Roosevelt General Hospital in Portales, New Mexico where she died as a result of her injuries.

Lujan-Benavidez, also from Morton, was treated for minor injuries at Lubbock Covenant Hospital.

Authorities say alcohol was not involved in the crash.
